AUDITIONING

An audition, either in person or by audition recording (no videos please), is required for all programs. Please review the audition requirements from the link on this page. Available spots are limited, therefore, it is recommended that you send in your audition material as soon as you can.

 

 

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR DRUMS:

SHORT-TERM INTENSIVE PROGRAM AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

To be performed solo, with or without a metronome.

1. Technique: Single stroke roll, double stroke roll, paradiddles: start each slowly and evenly and increase speed to fastest point.

2. Styles: Maximum of one minute for each example: rock - funk - swing.

3. Reading: (Note: you will be placed in our integrated reading program based on a day-one evaluation be a faculty member.)

  
FULL-TIME PROGRAM AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

To be performed solo, with or without a metronome.

1. Technique: Single stroke roll, double stroke roll, paradiddles: start each slowly and evenly and increase speed to fastest point.

2. Styles: Maximum of one minute for each example: rock - funk - swing - samba - shuffle.
Note: if you cannot play any of the above styles, then play those with which you are familiar.

3. Reading: (Note: you will be placed in our integrated reading program based on a day-one evaluation be a faculty member.)
 

ADVANCED PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

To be performed solo, with or without a metronome.

1. Technique: Single stroke roll, double stroke roll, paradiddles - start each slowly and evenly and increase speed to fastest point.

2. Styles:
Maximum of one minute for each example: rock - funk - swing - shuffle – calypso - reggae – Soca - second line - samba - 6/8 bembe - mambo - mozambique – afrobeat - hip-hop – drum n bass - 5/4 - 7/8.

3. Reading:
Rate yourself on a level of 0-10. (Note: you will be placed in our integrated reading program based on a day-one evaluation be a faculty member.)

 

  

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR BASS - GUITAR - KEYBOARD:

 

 

SHORT-TERM INTENSIVE PROGRAM AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

To be performed solo, with or without a metronome. Remember that evenness is more important than speed.

1. Technique: Play 1: all major scales, one octave, any sequence of keys. Play 2: major, minor and dominant 7th arpeggios, one octave, any sequence.

2. Styles:
Play each of the following grooves on a blues progression for a minimum of 24 bars with a metronome set at a comfortable tempo: rock - funk - swing

3. Reading:
Please rate your sight-reading on the application form on a scale of 1-10, with 1 equaling no reading ability.


FULL-TIME PROGRAM AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

These audition requirements apply to all full-time programs, except the Advanced Performance Program

To be performed solo, with or without a metronome. Remember that evenness is more important than speed.


1. Technique:
-Play all major scales, two octaves, any sequence of keys.

-Play all Maj7th, Dom7th, Min7th, Min7th (-5), Dim7th and Augmented triad, two octaves, any sequence.

2. Styles: Play each of the following grooves on a blues progression for a minimum of two choruses with a metronome set at a comfortable tempo: rock - funk - swing - samba - Afro-Cuban (optional).

NOTE: You can use a blues pattern, or any other pattern that you choose to perform in a given style. Omit any style with which you are not familiar.

3. Reading: Please rate your sight-reading on the application form on a scale of 1-10, with 1 equaling no reading ability.


ADVANCED PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

To be performed solo, with or without a metronome. Remember that evenness is more important than speed.

1. Technique:

-Play all major scales, two octaves, any sequence of keys.

-Play the three whole step-half step diminished scales, two octaves, any sequence.

-Play all Maj7th, Dom7th, Min7th, Min7th(-5), Dim7th and Augmented triad, two octaves, any sequence.

2. Styles:
Play each of the following styles for a minimum of two choruses (any chord progression); one chorus playing the melody, and one improvising. Play at a comfortable tempo: rock - funk - swing - shuffle – calypso - reggae  - samba - 6/8 bembe - mambo - mozambique –  hip-hop –  5/4 - 7/8.

3. Reading:
Please rate your reading on the application form on a scale of 1-10. A minimum of Intermediate level reading skill is a required for this program.

 

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR FULL TIME VOCAL PROGRAM:

Technique:

-Sing a major scale one octave, ascending and descending

-Sing a chromatic scale one octave ascending and descending.

 

Musicianship:

-Rate your music theory level on the following levels; beginner, intermediate, advance

-Play the three whole step-half step diminished scales, two octaves, any sequence.

 

Vocal Performance:

-Record yourself singing three different songs - a cappella, or with accompaniment, preferably in different styles.

 

Keyboard Skills (Optional)

-Play all major scales , two octaves, both hands, ascending and descending.

-Perform a piece of music, any styles, classical, jazz, or pop.
