Gary Pickard has been playing music since he first picked up a saxophone at the age of 8. Since then, Gary has become proficient in playing all saxophones, clarinets, flutes, guitars, basses, drums, and most currently, ukulele. He is also a singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, teacher and producer. He earned his BA in Jazz and Contemporary Music Performance from The New School Jazz Program. While there, Gary studied with teachers including Billy Drewes, Gerard D’Angelo, Reggie Workman, Bobby Sanabria, Billy Harper, Richard Boukas and Rory Stuart, to name a few. He has also studied privately with Sonny Dallas, Ranny Reeve and Mark Gatz.
Professionally, Gary has played with many different groups playing various musical styles including The Lonnie Plaxico Group and The Junior Mance Quartet. He has recorded with Lonnie Plaxico, Junior Mance, Cassandra Wilson, Steve Coleman and Mark Dresser among others. Currently, Gary is playing with Jay Vilnai’s Vampire Suit, The Kitsune Ensemble, Billy Fox’s Blackbirds and Bullets and the MK Groove Orchestra. He also plays drums with NYC metal powerhouse, IKILLYA, bass with avant-garde jazz/rock conglomerate, Willamette, sax and other various instruments with surf rock/punk/jazz band, The Moto-Wrays, and he sings and plays guitar, leading his own progressive hard rock band, nevereven.
