Daniel Glass is a multi-award winning drummer, author and educator. He is considered one of today’s foremost authorities on classic American drumming.
As a performer, Daniel is a member of the Brian Setzer Orchestra, one of the premier big bands in the world. He has held the drum chair with the pioneering “retro-swing” group Royal Crown Revue since 1994. Other performing and recording credits include: Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli, Gene Simmons, Mike Ness, Lorna Luft, Freddy Cole, Robert Gordon, Earnest Ranglin, and Unknown Hinson. Daniel has been voted one of the “Top Five R&B Drummers” for two years running by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine.
Since 1999, Daniel has researched and written extensively about the evolution of American drumming. His research includes over 50 interviews with legendary figures of the instrument, including Louie Bellson, Panama Francis, Don Lamond, and Earl Palmer. Daniel has published five books, including The Commandments of Early Rhythm and Blues Drumming, which won the award for “Media Product of the Year” in both Modern Drummer and DRUM magazines. In 2012, he released “The Century Project,” a DVD that explores 100 years of American drumming (1865-1965), and “TRAPS,” the first ever DVD dedicated to the subject of vintage drums. Daniel’s books and DVDs are currently part of the academic curriculum at the Berklee College of Music, the Thornton School of Music at USC, UCLA, and at McNally Smith College of Music in Minneapolis.
Additional writings include the entry on rock’n’roll drumming for the Encyclopedia of Percussion (edited by John Beck), and contributions to a variety of publications, including Modern Drummer, Classic Drummer, In-Tune Monthly and Percussive Notes. Since April, 2008, DRUM magazine has published a regular column by Daniel entitled “A Moment in History.”
In addition to his research and writing, Daniel works actively as an educator and clinician. He has presented at many prestigious international festivals, including PASIC 2009 (where he co-presented with Zoro), as well as the 2010 Modern Drummer Festival. In 2011, he was invited by Modern Drummer to be an inaugural member of their new advisory board, called the Pro Panel. He is currently a member of the Vic Firth Education team, as well as the Professional Drum Teachers Guild.
