This Winter, The Collective is offering a new way to study with some of our world-class faculty! We are excited to announce our new series of Listening Classes, a course that can be informative and enjoyed by both professional musicians and music lovers alike! Four 90-minute weekly online sessions for only $129! You will deep-dive into the songs and artists of some of the most influential styles of music, curated by experts in their genre!
Our Afro-Cuban music Listening Class will be curated by none other than 5-time Grammy Award-Winning drummer, Vince Cherico! Cherico is a celebrated world and latin music percussionist, who has played with legendary groups for over 3 decades. Ray Baretto, Dave Samuels, and most famously Arturo O’Farrill & The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (With whom he took home Grammys for the 2009 album, Song For Chico and 2016’s Cuba: The Conversation Continues) are just a select few of the major players in the World Music scene that Vince has played alongside. Cherico has performed at some of the top venues and festivals on the planet, including several prolific performances at Carnegie Hall, and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Vince also holds a residency at New York’s Birdland Jazz Club and Symphony Space, and is a celebrated faculty member at The Collective!
Cherico has carefully crafted this course to flow in a chronological order through the rhythms, key figures, and pieces that have shaped and influenced Afro-Cuban music into the modern day. From 1790 and the traditional Tumba Francesca to the 1880’s with the Rumba all the way through to today’s Mezcla Contemporánea! From Pepe Sanchez to Carlos Embale to Osain Del Monte, join Cherico on a listening history lesson, and see the throughline of the great Afro-Cuban music traditions!
Dates: January 12, 19, 26 & February 2nd from 7PM-8:30PM EST
