Collective Masters Live is back! For Collective Masters Live events, we bring masters of their craft to share their musical knowledge with our community through detailed performance-based presentations. Collective Masters Live events have been a celebrated part of what we do here at The Collective for years. All Collective Masters Live events can be attended in person at 28 Broadway NYC or online via the livestream.

Join the highly celebrated, respected, and often emulated drummer Ian Froman for a masterclass in double strokes related to time playing and in soloing on the drum set. Froman’s unique take on jazz drumming is the joining of many sources. After getting his start on the kit at the early age of 13, he taught himself for years. He was determined to develop his own style without outside interference. That is until he started gigging and realized there was more to learn. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Berklee College of Music and a Master’s Degree from the New England Conservatory, in addition to studying intensively under the great Elvin Jones. He went on to perform with the likes of Dave Liebman, Michael Brecker, Rick Margitza, Miroslav Vitous, two-time Canadian Juno Award winning group Metalwood, and many others.

Froman is unique in that his teaching style is equally as acclaimed as his musicianship. He encourages drummers to take responsibility for every note they play, emphasizing an expanded mindset over increased technicality. Drummers of all genres have taken lessons from Froman to integrate his signature approach into their musicality, including Abe LaBoriel Jr., Jim Black, Todd Sucherman of Sticks, Nate Morton of American Idol and many more at Berklee College of Music, The Drummer’s Collective, and SoundCollective. In his Collective Masters Live event, he will teach how to incorporate double strokes into your playing. In this Collective Masters Live, Froman will explain how he uses double stroke rolls to create an unmistakably original, untranscribable feel. You can attend the event in person at 28 Broadway NYC or participate via the livestream from anywhere!
