The Collective is offering Two more new ways to study with some of our world-class faculty! We are excited to continue our new series of Listening Classes. In-depth, 4 Class intensives that will deep-dive into the songs and artists of some of the most popular and influential styles of music, curated by experts in their genre!

Our first new Listening Class: “The Art of Listening to Contemporary Jazz” will be curated and taught by Collective Legend: Peter Retzlaff! Known for his musicality and command of a wide range of styles, Peter has been an integral member of the Drummers Collective since 1995, and maintains an active teaching schedule at The Collective 5 days a week! Peter is a clinician for Zildjian, Remo and Vic Firth.

According to Retzlaff, The course will focus on “Hearing how the musicians and music performances fit together as a whole. Both the casual listener as well as the performer will benefit from breaking down various songs and performers.” 

Peter has played with Kenny Werner, Greg Osby, Diane Schuur, Ray Vega, the BMI Big Band, and more! Peter received a B.A. in Jazz and Commercial Music and a B.A. in Business Administration from Capital University. He also received a M.M. in Jazz Studies from the Manhattan School of Music.

Our Second Listening Class will be “A Survey Of Hip-Hop”, taught by the incredible Camille Gainer! Beginning to play drums and other instruments at the age of 11 and eventually earning a music scholarship at Long Island University, Camille has gone on to work with some of the most seminal and creative Jazz, Funk, Soul, RnB, Pop, Reggae, and Hip-Hop artists of our time.  Her versatile skills on the kit and as a producer have made her one of the most sought after drummers and clinicians in New York City!

Camille will begin the course by discussing the general commercialization of music and the birth of popular music as we know it in 1939, and move chronologically through the 70’s and the birth of Hip-Hop. The listenings will continue to follow the through-line of Hip-Hop in the 80’s, the rising and unique cultures of Hip-Hop around the United States in the 90’s, Into the 2000’s and 2010’s to the styles we hear leading the charge today!

Camille has been heard alongside the likes of Antonio Hart, Joan Jett, Tanya Stephens, Sugar Minott, J.T. Taylor of Kool and the Gang, Marc Cary, Greg Osby, Steve Coleman, Michael Urbaniak, Kelis, Monifa, Roy Ayers, Christian McBride, M.C. Shan and the Juice Crew All-Stars Just to name a select few!

Peter and Camille will divulge into the history of these related and seminal genres in Contemporary Music in their own unique ways, bringing to the table a track list of works they deem important to analyze, discuss, and progress your knowledge of the music canon and taste to new heights! Classes will be interactive roundtable discussions on the pieces and songs brought into class by the instructors in a four-class intensive where you will discuss masterpieces with the masters themselves!
